MHS PTSO General Meeting Minutes November 11, 2008

MHS PTSO General Meeting Minutes

November 11, 2008

Note:  The minutes reflect the order of the agenda; however, the item concerning the school store was discussed first due to a schedule conflict.

Introductions were made and everyone was welcomed.

Principal’s Remarks

Administration was unable to attend.

Treasurer’s Report

Income for the month included $150 in dues, $2475 from the school store, and$503 from spirit wear.  Expenses included $280 for administrative (yearbook ad), $861 for appropriations, $1626 for the school store, and $1626 for spirit wear.

Committee Reports

Appropriations

The process is just about wrapped up, just waiting for a few more teachers to make purchases.  If the nurse needs more supplies, she needs to send a draft email to Dan Lane for requests for the clinic.

Bulletin Board

Nothing to report.

Fashionata

Karie Houston (chair) unable to attend but planning has started. The date of Fashionata is Friday evening, March 6, 2009 in the MHS Auditorium.

Front Office

Nothing to report.

Guidance

Nothing to report.

Hospitality

The committee continues to supply goodies for joint chiefs and department head meetings.  The Holiday Breakfast for teachers and staff is scheduled for December 12.

Landscaping

The November 8 landscaping day had very poor volunteer turnout.  The next projects include building a 7x32 foot raised bed out back by the trailer and creating 4 drainage holes, all to help with the drainage problem.  Lani Pearson and Nancy Elward will contact Kathy Oelberg about turning this into an Eagle Scout project.

School Store

Mel Duhon has renewed the Sam’s Club card.  Nancy Elward needs more parent volunteers.  She will send an email to Cele Eifert to send out a school-wide email asking for volunteers.  The student volunteers also have been missing their assigned times. A reminder announcement will be made at the next Student Club meeting. There was a suggestion made by Laura Potash to reimburse for the gas expense for purchasing the school store supplies by Mel at Sam’s.  A motion was made by Teresa Love and seconded by Pat Cook to allow reimbursement up to [Article].60 per mile.  (The federal standard is [Article].58.)  This led to much discussion about how much to reimburse, how often, what limit, who else could request reimbursement, etc.  The motion was withdrawn by Teresa, and the executive board will address this issue by the next meeting.  It was also noted that Mel Duhon and Nancy Elward have a huge job running the school store and that both will be gone next year.  An effective replacement system is crucial for the success of the school store.

Spirit Wear

The new spiritwear order forms have been sent out and orders for Christmas are due by Nov. 14.

Student Club

The next meeting is Nov. 19 at 8 am in Mrs Sullivan’s classroom. Cele Eifert will attend. Mrs Fleming still waiting to hear from county office about the cable hook-up for the TV the Student Club wants to purchase for the senior cafeteria.

Old Business

PTSO Night Meeting

A suggestion was made to hold an evening meeting in January.  Program topics include teen alcohol awareness and medical & safety issues. It was suggested that Dr Trevena might be a good resource for giving this presentation; Cele will contact him to see if he is willing and available.

Homecoming Update

A new PTSO committee will be formed next year to help facilitate the MHS homecoming parade and dance.  There was discussion about the homecoming parade route and if it would be possible to have it end at MHS instead of the Kroger parking lot on Hwy 54. Donna Duff shared some information on Starr’s Mill HS events. Compared with MHS, SMHS has more parents involved and spends more time on the almost every aspect of homecoming. With more MHS parents helping the faculty and administration homecoming planners next year, it should be easier to create a more festive occasion.

New Business

PIE Brunch

Tabled this item to next meeting.

Teacher Holiday Breakfast

See Hospitality committee report.

Car Jump-Start Kit

Mr. Prince, the parking lot attendant, needs a car jump-start kit.  Laurel Cantlon made a motion to spend up to $100 to purchase the kit.  Sabrina Aslam seconded the motion.  The motion passed.  Laura Potash will follow up with the front office.

Other Items

The PTSO needs suggestions for a farewell gift for Mrs. Fleming who is moving to the county office after this semester.

The PTSO needs to check with Betty Franke about the promotion of the Publix cards.

The next meeting will be a holiday gathering – part business and part social – at the home of Laurel Cantlon.  There will be a gift swap and the PTSO exec board will provide  the refreshments. Hard-copy & electronic invitations will be sent to committee chairs so they can, in turn, invite their committee members.

Respectfully submitted,

Pat Cook, substitute secretary
